Bearscapes: Rule of Thirds

Photographing grizzly bears amongst beautiful landscapes make some of the best wall hanging art. We call them "Bearscapes". On the Alaska Bear Workshop the grizzly bears walk towards the beach with mountains in the distance. Water tides receed, leaving a thin layer of water creating a reflection as the grizzly bear walks. An ideal "Bearscape".

Rule of Thirds: Each third is 9 equals parts. Keep your subject in 1/3 leaving 2/3 thirds for a nice composition. The photograph below demonstrates the application of the rule of thirds. Photographing your subject in the far right thrid of the photo creates a nicer composition. It doesn't have to be exact as you need to adjust for the best composition possible. In this case, the bear is also in the 2nd third. Notice the bear has room to walk forward in the photo? Leaving space in the photo (two-thrids of space) to the left of the bear provides the viewer a sense of forward motion. The horizon sits at the horizontal line dividing the lower third of the photo from the upper two-thirds.

Points of interest. In the photo your subject does not have to actually touch one of these lines to take advantage of the rule of thirds. If the bear was walking from left to right, then he should be in the first third with space to walk forward. Watch the Bearscape Video below and we hope you join us on the next Alaska Bears Photo Tour or Alaska Fishing Bears the BC Grizzly Tour with David Hemmings. Be sure to share with friends!
